April 14th, 2025 // Vol. VI // Here We Go Again!
Buenos Días. A little cloudy in Houston on this fine Monday morning. Happy:
National Gardening Day (May our thumbs all be a little greener)
National Dolphin Day (Did you know that dolphins get high on puffer fish venom?)
Look Up At The Sky Day (Anyone else watch the Blue Origin launch this morning?)
National Pecan Day (It’s a puh-kahn, but it’s also pee-can pie. I don’t make the rules)
National Ex-Spouse Day (for any of my divorced readers: how do you plan on celebrating??)
I don’t know when y’all tend to read this, but one of my friends mentioned that he pulls it up during his morning shit, and I think that’s beautiful. That’s exactly the type of content I’m trying to produce, so I’m glad it’s working. Other friends have said, “I feel like [The Daily Boofy] is better enjoyed when under the influence of something” and “This is perfect to read later when I’m drunk,” both of which also align with my goals. Regardless of your state of mind or location, let’s have a day:

Mamma Mia! Here we go again for-the-very-first-time-because-I’ve-never-even-seen-the-movie! My my, what a time though!
My mom, sister, and I headed to Houston’s Hobby Center to catch the 25th anniversary tour of the smash hit musical yesterday afternoon. I will say, I did know a ton of the songs going in because I was raised well and am not a music casual. That prior knowledge probably only served to annoy my mom and sister because I tapped them every time one of the hits came on.

me when they started singing dancing queen
My biggest takeaway was that this musical is just pure, classic fun. Did they miss some notes? Yes. Was some of the sound mixing off, leading to a ridiculously loud orchestra at times? Also yes. Was the energy radiating off the stage into the house so high that these minor issues didn’t matter? For the third time, yes!
The cast’s chemistry was unmistakable, and I was particularly impressed by Victor Wallace (Sam), Jalynn Steele (Tanya), and Jasmine Overbaugh (Rosie). Sam’s internal conflict came across beautifully, while Tanya and Rosie’s chemistry stole the show.
The set was simple and not distracting, taking you to the Greek isles while keeping you focused on the story itself. The characters clearly felt at home there, and the actors did a fantastic job of using the props and the space to make it feel as though they’d been on that island for years.
My biggest qualm was the lull I felt following the intermission. Maybe I was just tired, but conflict rather than pop-rock ballad to start the second act began putting me to sleep. I quickly got my energy back, but still worth noting.
I’m really glad I asked that question about listening to music for sound or lyrics the other day. A musical clearly needs to strike a balance between both, as so much of the story was told through song. In this case, it was really cool seeing how these songs I’ve heard hundreds of times before advanced the story with lyrics I’d never really considered.
If your city is a stop on this tour, take a weekend day to whisk away to Greece and lose yourself in the music of ABBA. Just don’t let my sister talk you out of it.

What do you shoot (golf)?

well, golf might not be our strong suit, but that’s ok!
