April 9th, 2025 // Vol. I // So... Why'd I Get This Email?

Let me test my omniscience: You saw this pop into your inbox and instantly hovered over the delete button. Then, you read the first couple words of the subject line and preview and decided to give it a chance. Thanks. Chances are that you just know me in real life, I found your email in my address book, and added you to the list. Sorry. No say in the matter for you. Either that, or I pestered you late last night to subscribe. Whichever the case, you likely already knew this was coming, or you at least know who Boofy is.

If that’s not the reason for your reception, then you were probably on Kate’s (a.k.a. NewsAggreKATEd) email list. I get you for free as part of our collaboration, so thanks for being here. (If you were on my list, that’s why you got that other random email earlier in the morning—read it though! It gives you all the news of the day you need to know in a quick, digestible format).

If it’s not one of those two reasons, then you’re one of the strangers I accosted for their email the second you seemed remotely interested in politics. Unethical? Possibly. But you gotta use guerrilla tactics in this doggy-dog world that is blogging.

As the OGs know, I started a blog called Jason Of All Trades about a year ago (411 days ago, to be specific). It was fun, and I wrote some good stuff, but something was missing (besides just consistency): I couldn’t figure out what I wanted to be writing on a regular basis. My interests were so vast that Jason Of All Trades was stuck in choice paralysis, unable to decide topic, length, anything. That’s why Boofy is here to set him free.

A revamp/style change has been in the works for a while (as loyal JOAT readers know), but I did an impressive job of avoiding learning only a tad more html/css to finish that project. I’m not sure that avoidance will ever stop, but thanks to some newsletter building skills I learned in my last internship, I frankensteined my unfinished creation into what you read before you.

Psst! Get to the content already!

Ok, ok. Now, instead of trying to stretch what could probably be a tweet into a 600-word post, I can bash you over the head with rapid short-form thoughts and content. As with JOAT, expect a little bit of everything. Sports, movies, travel, culture, and for the first time ever, politics. That’s right. No more being a wimp and holding in my opinions because I didn’t want to piss anyone off. Now, I’ll be writing frequent columns on the direction our country, society, and world are heading and what could be done to fix it. If you agree? Great! If you don’t? Even better. Instead of unsubbing (rage quitting), write me back with your thoughts. The key to a better political landscape in this world is enlightened and respectful disagreement. Help me make that a reality.

Enough yammering! I, Boofy, along with News AggreKATEd, am super excited to kick off this new era and put my recently conferred journalism degree to good use. The intros will never be this long again, I promise. Thanks for sticking with me, and without further ado…

THE FIRST VOLUME OF

- Elon Musk called Peter Navarro (Trump’s trade advisor and tariff czar) “dumber than a sack of bricks” as the two feud over the tariffs. Karoline Leavitt said the spat was just “Boys [being] boys “ and that Trump will let them continue to fight it out in public.

- A judge ruled that the White House must give the Associated Press full access to Trump again, saying that banning the outlet because of its coverage was a violation of the First Amendment.

- Boofy’s Comment Section: Ok, let’s start with Musk vs. Navarro. I would contend that they’re both dumber than a sack of bricks, albeit for different reasons. Also that wasn’t the craziest thing that Musk said; he also called Navarro “Peter Retarrdo.” Nice one. I will side with Musk on this one though as he disparages the tariffs largely constructed by Navarro, because the only thing dumber than both of them are Trump’s tariffs. On to the AP: I fully support the ruling of this judge, as this whole debacle was clearly petty to begin with, and now an important, non-partisan media source is back in a position where it can properly cover and expose what this administration is up to. “Gulf of America” is still a very funny bit though. Now, a news bullet from myself (Don’t expect this to be a regular thing): The Trump administration froze over $790 million in funding to Northwestern (my… alma mater?? yikes) as part of its investigation into “civil rights violations” over DEI policies and last year’s pro-Palestinian protests. Those grants mostly funded research, continuing this admin’s mission to topple the US from its perch as world leader in research. Go ‘Cats!

-After weeks of basically telling everyone anyway, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced that he will challenge Senator John Cornyn in next year’s Republican primary.

-The Supreme Court stopped a decision from a federal judge that ordered Trump to rehire thousands of probationary federal workers who were fired. The justices ruled that the nonprofit groups (who were the plaintiffs) didn’t have standing to sue.

Boofy’s Comment Section: As a Texan, I can’t wait to see how Paxton vs Cornyn unfolds. Paxton is folded up in his own corruption issues, but I think people around the state just don’t like Cornyn either. As for the probationary workers, I understand the underlying legal rationale, but I hope someone can take up this case who actually has standing. Some of these employees were not newly-hired and fresh-faced, but rather experienced professionals in their field who recently were promoted for their quality work. They don’t deserve this firing en masse.

-China retaliated against Trump’s 104% tariff and said they will be placing an 84% tariff on US imports which will take effect tomorrow.

-Ukraine captured two Chinese citizens who were fighting for Russia in Ukraine’s Donetsk region. Zelensky’s intelligence also indicates that there are many more currently fighting.

Boofy’s Comment Section: Yay! More tariffs! As stated before, tariffs are stupid. Trump’s dreams of turning America into a manufacturing empire are farcical and outdated. It’s antithetical to the dream of the American worker; no one wants to work in factories when there are perfectly good email jobs that will keep you in the AC! (See this interaction between Trump and former economic advisor Gary Cohn from term 1 for more on Trump’s refusal to change his opinions on maunfacturing). Next: Chinese citizens fighting with Russia, exactly what you want to hear about a conflict that needs no global escalation. A bad omen if you ask me…
