Cinco De Mayo, 2025 // Vol. XIX // Revenge of The Fifth
Hi. Welcome back. The weather is still gross in Evanston, and it’s really starting to piss me off. Maybe just a case of the Mondays, but I doubt it. Maybe I’ll be cheered up by the fact that it’s:
Cinco De Mayo (you might be more familiar with the colloquial name “Cinco De Drinko.” Keep reading from some help with celebrating properly)
My Dog Payton’s Birthday (This date was arbitrarily decided by my family (with no input from me). Everybody say “Happy Birthday Payton,” though)
National Cartoonist Day (I used to be the cartoonist for the school paper in third grade. I think my best panel was something about why you bake a cookie and cook bacon. Real Greg Heffley-level stuff. Maybe I need to make a comeback…)
National Astronaut Day (only ~676 people in all human history have traveled to space. That’s ~.00000057% of all humans ever. Nuts.)
I hope the Fourth was with you yesterday, because it’s the Revenge of the Fifth today. Much of my weekend was spent watching Star Wars if you couldn’t tell. I even got a balloon animal lightsaber to really immerse myself. Ok, enough intergalactic conflict. Let’s get on to the good stuff:

Flood Brothers: Live In Concert
This review will be quick, even quicker than their 45-minute set Saturday. I bussed my way over to the Happy Day Tavern on N. Elston (something I will likely never do again—not because of the bus, but because of the bar) to catch one of my dad’s best friends, Jimmy, jam with his band. Come 8 o’clock, the crowd (of 7) was raucous (quite tame), ready for Flood Brothers to start. The set was short, sweet, and best of all for Jimmy, early in the night.
They flipped through some 80s and rock classics, with selections ranging from Duran Duran to R.E.M. to Petty to Skynrd. The small space meant the sound surrounded you, and I especially appreciated how deeply I could feel the bass. Loud and proud is how I like my music, and that’s exactly what I got from Flood Brothers
Live music is (almost) always good, and others should be jealous that they weren’t one of the 7 in attendance.
