July 17, 2025 // Vol. XLI // Try Your Luck Today

What’s up. Slow start today in the H. Is this what life after 40 feels like? Uh-oh. Might as well celebrate, then. Happy:

  • National Lottery Day (Might as well buy a ticket. Looks like Powerball is at $288M, and Mega Millions are at $100M)

  • National Tattoo Day (No one tell my sister)

  • World Emoji Day (I feel like emojis went from way overused to very underrated. A tactical emoji can always hit)

  • National Yellow Pig Day (Apparently this is to celebrate the number 17? I don’t know anymore, man)

The Open Championship teed off today at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, and there’s only one guy anyone should be rooting for: Cameron Adam. The former Wildcat phenom qualified as one of the top European amateurs and is making all of us proud. As he looks to have a day on the course, let’s have a day ourselves:

QOTD 41: What’s the first thing you would do if you won the lottery?

What’s one book everyone should read?

We’ve built ourselves quite a little reading list:

  • The Bible by God(?)

  • Elon Musk by Walter Isaacson (Haven’t gotten to this one yet, but Isaacson spoke about it briefly when I saw him. It seems like a fascinating insight into how one of the most powerful men of this era operates, as well as to how he’s changed)

  • Art of the Deal by Donald Trump (Does it say anything about tariffs?)

  • Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom (haven’t read, but looks to be full of life lessons)

  • The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald (I hope this doesn’t bring back too many bad memories of high school)

  • 1984 by George Orwell (seems to be becoming more and more of a cautionary tale…)

  • Industrial Society and Its Future by The Unabomber (I guess if you’re curious to see how the man thought…)

  • Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (I know I need to give Dostoevsky another crack, but Brothers Karamazov was a struggle and a half)

  • When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi (Kalanithi’s memoir about his battle with cancer—seems poignant)

  • The Defining Decade by Meg Jay (Making the most of your twenties is probably something I should read up on)

  • Now Is The Time For Running by Michael Williams (Soccer, trials, and heartbreak. Sounds like the life of a Tottenham fan pre-Bilbao)

  • The Boys In The Boat by Daniel James Brown (If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything nice at all)

Now I have no excuse to complain about not knowing what to read. Time to hit the library I guess

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

I had brisket for lunch, so today has to be a good day.

As always, email me with any column requests or content ideas. Now, it’s a great day to have a day. Drink plenty of water. Go outside. And remember: the greatest gift of life is simply being alive. Make the most of it.

Hasta mañana.
